Skincare usually begins with what we can see in the mirror, but the real work starts much deeper. Every layer of your skin is made from specialised cells that need energy to renew, communicate, protect the barrier and respond to damage.

First, what is a cell?

A cell is one of the body's smallest living building blocks. Cells join together to form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs work together to keep the body functioning.

Different cells have different jobs. In the skin, some help form the protective barrier, some produce pigment and others make collagen and elastin. Healthy skin therefore depends on far more than the products applied to its surface.

Meet the mitochondria

Mitochondria are often described as tiny power stations inside our cells. They help turn nutrients and oxygen into ATP, the usable energy a cell needs to do its work.

That energy supports everyday processes including renewal, repair, communication and the production of important skin structures. Mitochondria are not the only part of skin ageing, but when cellular energy and repair become less efficient, the skin may become less resilient too.

Why does skin age?

Where does LED phototherapy fit?

Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence cellular activity. Light-sensitive components associated with mitochondrial function can absorb this light, which may affect energy production and signalling involved in repair and inflammation.

This does not mean that any coloured light will rejuvenate the skin. Wavelength, energy, dose, coverage and treatment time all matter. Clinically researched LED may support repair, collagen production, barrier function, redness and overall skin quality, but it cannot replace hormones, medical care, good skincare or healthy daily habits.

Keep the big picture simple

You do not need to understand every chemical pathway to make better decisions for your skin. The useful lesson is that skin is living tissue. It responds to hormones, health, environment, protection, treatment and time.
